Physical Properties

An often fine, hard gem material that occurs in many colours.
Rubellite is the pink, red variety.
Indicolite is a dark blue.
Dravite is brown.
Achroite is colourless.
Watermelon is a green and red variety.
Schorl is black.
The most common types of tourmaline are green and yellow. Tourmaline can sometimes show a cats eye when cut en cabochon. Crystals of tourmaline can be very attractive and are sought after.
Chemical composition: Complex borosilicate
Crystal structure: Trigonal.
Hardness: 7.5
