Pyrite is found worldwide in igneous, sedimentary and igneous rocks. Due to its brassy yellow colour it is sometimes mistaken for gold, hence the name fools gold. The name comes from the Greek word pyr meaning fire. Sparks can be caused when hit with a hammer.

The famous mineralogist George Frederick Kunz in his 20th century book 'The Curious Lore of Precious Stones' associated golden pyrite to the
Sun and
Mercury and silver pyrite to the
Moon. He also associated pyrite ashto the planet
Jupiter and pyrite-tin to the planet
Saturn.
