Physical Properties

Hematite or Haematite usually occurs as massive opaque metallic material with a botryoidal structure. It has a red colour when cut into thin slices. Specular hematite occurs as shiny crystals. Sometimes it forms in a flower pattern which is known as a hematite rose.
Chemical composition: Iron oxide.
Crystal structure: Trigonal.
Hardness: 6.5

Hematite is one of the stones of the zodiac sign Capricorn. The 17th century astrologer William Lilly associated it the planet Mercury whereas the famous mineralogist George Frederick Kunz in his 20th century book 'The Curious Lore of Precious Stones' associated it with the planet Saturn.
